Blue Frog Truffles
The Blue Frog Truffle Farm (or truffiere), has been harvesting black truffles (T. melanosporum) since 2007. The farm is located just north of Canberra (5 km from the ACT border), close to the Federal Highway and was established in 2003 with the planting of just over 2 hectares of oaks and hazelnut trees. The area was increased in 2008, with additional oaks, to approximately 4.5 hectares.
The Blue Frog Farm owners, Wayne, Lanie and son Justin Haslam are strong supporters of the Australian truffle industry and Wayne was instrumental in the establishment of the Australian Truffle Growers Association in 2006 and the Canberra Region Truffle Festival in 2009. The Festival seeks to include growers and venues in the ACT and a large area of regional NSW. Blue Frog Farm plays an active role in the Festival Grower Association, which runs the Festival from the June winter solstice, through July until harvest-end in August. We welcome visits by chefs and their staff, (at no cost) to learn about the truffle industry in Australia and the finer points of growing and harvesting truffles.
We harvest twice week and will be conducting truffle hunts during the season on Sunday for groups and the for the general public.
