Making an omelette from truffle infused eggs
Looking for truffle? So are the growers, usually on a number of days a week, depending on the season. The truffle season starts in mid/late June and will continue through to early/mid August. Because most of the venues below are only open late week and weekend, if you are visiting or planning a special dinner party, you may need to reserve your purchase a week ahead. The growers who don’t have their own dogs, use contract hunters and their busy schedule dictates the times that fresh truffle is available. Ok?
Let’s start with the Truffle Hunts. Many of the growers will have truffle for sale at the end of the hunt (check with the farm before hand). That’s often truffle that was found on the hunt, and because time is tight to get people back to town, cleaning them of dirt takes time. Some growers will sell them with the dirt on, and allow a few grams for that. See our Truffle Hunts page for details.
Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets are open Thursday to Sunday 8.00am to 5.30pm. You’ll be able to buy fresh truffles and truffle products at 3Seeds Cooking School and Store, Mart Deli, Wiffens and Deli Planet. All the venues will take orders in advance or you can buy fresh on the day from the experienced staff. The markets are selling exclusively French Black Truffles of Canberra truffles, and all are First Grade. See the Fyshwick Market website, or our Markets page.
The Canberra Region Farmer’s Market at EPIC (our showground precinct) opens early each Saturday morning, with various truffle growers setting up stall from 8.00am and the market closing at 11.00am. The truffles can be examined and you can smell them to make sure they’re strong and ready. If needed the growers will cut off a lump or slice to order. You may have to take a slightly bigger or smaller piece that way, but the scales are all accurate and the sellers will give you some options. Talk to the growers, ask their advice. They’ll explain the different grades and point out truffles that might be less pretty but have better aroma. We’ve seen lots of people buy a small piece and come back next week for a bigger one when they know how much to use. See the Farmers Market website or our Markets page.
Belconnen Fresh Food Markets are open Wednesday to Sunday 8.00am to 6.00pm. You’ll be able to buy fresh truffles and truffle products at Cooking Coordinates and Deli Cravings. These venues will take orders in advance or you can buy fresh on the day. There will also be some cooking demonstrations. See the Belconnen Market website, or our Markets page.
